Summertime in the Loire Valley Tasting with Andrew MacFarlane of American NW Imports–6/28/2012, 5-7 PM
There is nothing like Summer in the Loire Valley. Its mosaic of 69-appellations from Nantes to Sancerre make it the third largest winegrowing region in France. We are very happy to bring wines from Domaine Joseph Mellot to you this evening! Not only will you get a chance to taste some terrific Old World Sauv Blancs & Pinots, but you will also taste history: Mellot has been producing wines in Sancerre since 1513!
Taste
2011 Sincérité Pinot Noir
This wine’s clear and luminous salmon pink hue is typical of Pinot Noir rosés. This 100%
Pinot Noir rosé starts off with floral notes and opens up to aromas of blackcurrant buds.
Round on the palate with freshness and good length this delightfully dry wine stands out for
its freshness and aromatic finesse. Very refreshing and a little too easy to drink! It’ll
go well with charcuteries, white meats on the grill and spicy Asian cuisine.
2011 Sancerre Rosé “Le Rabault”
The grapes come from flint-rich soils and result in a beautiful “hint-of-ruby”-colored wine. Floral notes on the nose, round on the palate–a perfect, fresh summer thirst quencher. 100% Pinot Noir.
2011 Sincérité Sauvignon Blanc
100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from a variety of the Joseph Mellot vineyards. This “Baby Sancerre” displays an attractive aromatic nose combining floral notes with bright citrus. Full and expressive on the palate with a clean and crisp finish of fresh minerality. An extremely appealing wine that’s great with summer salad and flaky white fish or perfect as an aperitif on the patio!
2008 La Grande Chatelaine Sancerre
The wine was fermented and aged in oak barrels with 30% new oak in Mellot’s historic cellars in the heart of the village of Sancerre. Mellot likes to say this is where the alchemy between the exceptional terroirs & oak from the region’s forests occurs. Fermentation lasts 2-to 7-months and the wine is aged for 20-months. A very fine nose with refined aromas of
flowers, pink peppercorns & exotic fruit. Swirl, and you’ll get notes of coconut & toasted bread. In the mouth the fruit intensity has a lovely freshness and a long finish. This wine is fantastic now and may be cellared for many years. 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
2010 Le Montarlet Sancerre Blanc
Beautiful straw color, with classic Old World aromatics of Gooseberry. The flint-rich siliceous clay soil gives this 100% Sauvignon Blanc a steely fresh character with notes of juicy grapefruit.
2009 Sincérité Pinot Noir
Gorgeous ruby color, with a powerful and rich nose of aromas of red fruit. Tannins are mellow and well matured. A nice and beautiful maturity of the aromas together with roundness in the mouth. This wine is excellent with grilled fish, red meats, cheeses and red fruits. 100% Pinot Noir.
